THE BUREL

THE STORY

The history of the Burel fabric dates back to the middle ages. Typically used to make shepherd's covers, the traditional technique for producing Burel is still alive today in Portugal - using the wool from sheep bred by small producers in Serra da Estrela (northern region of the country) - a true art, passed from generation to generation.

  •
  • The raw material named “xerga” (100% sheep's wool web before threading) is separated by hand and washed in cold and hot water, and then pressed (beaten and compressed with a pisão, a traditional wooden tool)

  • The cloth is compressed for 24h, and, straightened, washed, and re-tiled.

  • After it cools down, the cloth is spread out in the sun for several hours to dry.
